Open your Instagram insights and it is easy to go straight to two numbers: likes and views. They are the biggest, loudest metrics, so they feel like the scoreboard. Here is the thing we say to clients all the time, though: likes and views are not the only metrics that matter, and they are usually not even the most important ones.
The numbers that actually tell you whether your content is working, and whether it is growing your business, are a little quieter and a lot more useful. Here is what to look at, and what each one really means.
Start with reach, not just views
Views count every time your content was seen, so one person watching your reel three times counts as three. Reach, or "accounts reached," counts unique accounts. That is the number that tells you how many actual humans you got in front of.
Then look one level deeper at the split between followers and non-followers. Non-followers are new people, and new people are how you grow. When a big chunk of your reach is coming from non-followers, your content is escaping your existing bubble and finding a fresh audience. That is exactly what you want to see.

Likes are nice. Saves and shares are gold.
This is the one we want you to remember. A like is the lowest-effort thing someone can do. It basically means "that was nice" as they keep scrolling. Saves and shares mean something completely different.
A save says "I want to come back to this," which tells Instagram your content is genuinely valuable. A share says "I want other people to see this," which is word-of-mouth doing its job for free. Both signal to the algorithm that your post is worth pushing to more people, which is why they often matter more for growth than a pile of likes ever will.

The metrics closest to your business
Some numbers sit right next to real results: profile visits, website or link taps, and follows. These are actions, not vanity. A profile visit means someone was curious enough to check you out. A link tap means they were interested enough to head toward booking or buying. And steady follower growth means you are building a real audience, not just renting attention for a day.
One healthy viral spike is fun, but consistent follower growth week over week is the number that actually compounds.

So which number matters most? The one tied to your goal
Here is the real secret: there is no single "most important" metric for everyone. The number that matters most is the one closest to your actual business goal, because the point is to grow your business, not just your follower count.
So decide what a win looks like for you, then track the action that leads straight to it:
- Want more appointments? Watch your website and link clicks. Those are the people heading to your booking page.
- Want sign-ups for a freebie, a waitlist, or your email list? Watch comments and DMs, especially on a "comment a word and I'll send you the link" style post.
- Want sales? Watch link clicks and the checkouts or inquiries that follow.
Once you know your goal, that one metric becomes your north star. Likes, views, saves, and shares are all helpful supporting signals, but they are only doing their job when they move that needle.
For reels, watch your retention
Video has one more number worth watching: average watch time, or retention. A reel can rack up thousands of views, but if the average watch time is a couple of seconds, people are scrolling right past. When you see strong reach and follows coming from a single reel, that is a piece of content worth studying and making more of.

Zoom out before you judge anything
Do not grade yourself on one post. Look at engagement relative to reach, and look at the trend over a few weeks. Are your saves, shares, reach, and follows generally climbing? That is the real scoreboard. A single quiet post means nothing. A pattern means everything.
